No Messi and Ronaldo in World Cup best XI

Mbappe vs Modric

The 21st World Cup ended with France becoming the world champions for the second, their first since that famous 1998 victory.

While collectively some teams were outstanding, the tournament was not short of moments of brilliance by some players.

Harry Kane took the tournament by storm, scoring six times as the Three Lions matched on to the semi-final, even though four of those goals were scored from the penalty box.

However  he did it did not matter in the end as the Tottenham Hotspur hitman finished the tournament as the top attacking player, thus achieving the feat recorded by compatriot Gary Linker in Mexico 86.

Luka Modric indeed came to life in the tournament with series of individual brilliance and ingenuity, scoring twice in the group stage and playing a leading role as the Croatian fairy-tale procession to the tournament decider was only halted by a resilient French side in the final.

His performances throughout the tournament alongside his partner in crime Ivan Rakitic, earned him the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament, same as Lionel Messi did four years ago.

Kylian Mbappe! Perhaps the best young talent in the world right now without a doubt. A brace against Argentina shoot him into limelight in the tournament and a further strike in the final saw him finished with four goals, thus earning himself the Golden Boy award as the best young player of the tournament.

Belguim Thaibut  Courtois won the Golden Glove award as the best goalkeeper of the tournament while Spain national team who exited the tournament at the quarters- final stage won the fair play award.
